Does the mom song and dance ever change? Or is it one of those “The more things change…” things? This is the perfect play for anyone who is a mom, knows a mom, or has a mom they once spit up on. Prairie Theatre Exchange, in partnership with The Belfry Theatre, brings five performer-parents to the stage in Mom’s the Word, beginning November 9th with a preview and running to November 27th.
Mom’s the Word is an unvarnished look at motherhood – the good, the bad, and the sometimes very smelly – told through stories, anecdotes and “mom”-ologues, all gleaned from the personal experiences of real-life moms.
The play was written by Linda A. Carson, Jill Daum, Alison Kelly, Robin Nichol, Barbara Pollard, and Deborah Williams, six Vancouver actors who had recently become moms and were struggling with the transition into parenthood. After taking its first steps at the Women in View Festival in the early nineties, Mom’s the Word premiered in Vancouver at the Arts Club Theatre Company in 1995.
Even though the play is over 20 years old the universal themes of losing yourself a bit to parenthood still ring true. And with the new generation of GenX and Millennial dads, is parental stress lessening or are we just sharing the burden more? This will be a great time to explore, laugh, and cry a little at the absurdity of parenthood, motherhood, and how you still wouldn’t trade it for the world.
After more than 2,500 performances to over one million people on five continents, Mom’s the Word will arrive in Winnipeg with new actors and a slightly updated script, but the same horrifyingly hilarious parenting truths. This international hit took the stage at The Belfry Theatre in Victoria earlier this year, and Winnipeg actor Trish Cooper says she loved listening for comments and feedback from the audience. “It was so funny – we would hear parents in the crowd saying, ‘that’s just like Aidan!’ or ‘I do that, too!’ People get really excited about seeing their own experiences played out on stage.”
Mom’s the Word stars actors Trish Cooper as Alison, Sarah Donald as Jill, Yumi Ogawa as Linda, Jennifer Paterson as Deborah and Lisa C. Ravensbergen as Robin. The creative team features Director Michael Shamata, Assistant Director Deborah Williams, Set & Costume Designer Pam Johnson, Lighting Designer Bryan Kenney, Movement Coach Jessica Hickman, Stage Manager Sarah Robb and Assistant Stage Manager Ntarra Curry.
