Hosting An International High School Student: What You Need To Know

The Winnipeg School Division is launching a new initiative this fall to attract international students who want to learn English while living and going to school in our great city–and this is where you could come in and help.

The Winnipeg School Division’s new International Education Program welcomes students from all over the world and aims to promote diversity, increase enrolment in target schools, and introduces international students to life in Canada. International students attend anywhere from 2 months to a full school year. Canadian Home Stay Network (CHN) are experts with 20 years of experience in maximizing host family engagement. Family matches are made according to lifestyle profiles and preferences (from sports interests to allergies) to ensure positive experiences for all involved.

So how does it work? For these international students, school is only 5.5 hours per day and these students will spend more time outside school experiencing every day life in Canada. The families who house students gain an extra family member and many times the relationship is long-lasting and is an opportunity to make a difference in a student’s life and share values. Students and their host families may gain life long friendships and students learn about new culture in intimate setting. Host families are NOT required to pay for anything out of pocket; in fact, there is an allowance for host families (generally between host allowance between $725 and $800 CAD). What does an international student need from a host family? Besides the security of a home and family environment, students would require:

  • A private room, access to a bathroom
  • 3 meals per day (student take/eat lunch at school)
  • Students are high school age = mature and independent
  • Inclusion in family dinner in evenings, family celebrations and events
  • Showcase Winnipeg hospitality and culture
  • Host families can be as engaged with the school as you want – some hosts attend parent/teacher conferences, but it’s not an expectation

Please note that Canada Home Stay Network also offers respite. So if you have a short trip planned or an emergency comes up, CHN will find a place for the student to stay.

If your family is looking for a unique experience to learn from another culture and showcase what makes Winnipeg great, please visit WhyIHost.ca and visit the Winnipeg School Division’s website to download an application. Once you submit your application, you will be contacted by telephone to arrange a home visit to complete the home stay application process.

Have you hosted a students or other type of exchange like this? We’d love to hear your story!
